We in America have come to know ourselves by the naming of our generations. There was of course The Greatest Generation, our venerable grand-sires, who survived the Great Depression and overthrew the Nazi war machine. Their children, conceived in the exultation that followed, were the Baby Boomers, inheriting a little of their parents' mettle but never tempered by the same adversity. These were followed by Generation X, or 'Gen X,' an unsavory term for an unsavory people. The generation that succeeded them deserves worse...

Describe a stranger that interested you.
I met him in a pub, he claimed to be a gardener, he told me that his daughter got killed by a dog, it was the dog of his shrink, and he was there to threaten him that day, he never realised that his daughter had followed him until he heard the shrieks. The dog shrieked. A so-called meek labrador named Françoise after the shrink's twin sister who was struck by lightning at the age of ten...

She has since become a Dutch poet of note and recently won the prestigious C. Buddingh' Prize for 2010...

She was visibly sorry that I should have to carry all the burden of talk, and remained politely attentive no matter how inane my ramblings grew; bravely, I pressed on...

Not long after the book was published, I had the opportunity to travel to London for a few days. I couldn't help but think that I would be an amphibious invasion's distance from Belgium. I asked the author of the book if it was possible to plan a visit. She said there used to be a ferry, but when I looked into it I learned the ferry was defunct. I had become so used to the idea of meeting her though, that I persisted and at last found a train that departed and returned the same day; I booked it, though the ticket was more than I could afford - serendipity sometimes requires a little bit of elbow grease...
